PRIVATE RESIDENCE

San Marino, California

With a love of British Colonial architecture in such places as Singapore and Bermuda, this family wanted to develop a home that reminded them of their travels. An existing tropical-themed swimming pool remains at the heart of the property, while the new home and gardens were designed with British Colonial influences, both traditional and modern.

Metaphors for bridge and waterfall were used at the front entry, while the rear of the property with swimming pool was enhanced with a cabana, pool house, fire bowl and lush tropical plantings.

Fire and water became an important theme, and rich materials such as Ipe, natural stone and aged copper were used to deepen the character of the garden.

A perimeter wall accented with Ipe and vines, and a vehicular gate of metal treillage and Ipe provides a strong introduction to the overall theme of the home and garden.
